Review Atlas V6 SUV

product reviewer

The VW Atlas three-row SUV offers great seating and cargo space in a very affordable package. It's an ideal choice for families. But it also works well as a fun way of traveling with your friends and/or a couple.

Review atlas vw

The Volkswagen Atlas is overdue for an update. However, it's still an attractive family SUV that's easy-to-drive and well-built. The model offers a range in trims as well as a host of technology features to make it suitable for modern drivers.

The V6 engine standard makes a good amount of power. It also has an easy eight-speed auto transmission. Although it doesn't have the same acceleration as its rivals, it will get you there with reasonable ease.

Fuel economy isn't the best, but it's not bad at all compared to the base SUVs from Honda and Kia. It achieves 20 mpg in cities and 25 mpg highway, which isn’t bad.

The interior comfort is good, with a quiet cabin that's easy to use and decent quality controls. The third-row seats have enough leg and shoulder room for adults. Additionally, there is a reclining back seat with an ottoman that allows you to store items when you're on the go.

Driver assistance technologies are plentiful and helpful. The standard Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert warn you when vehicles are close to your blind spots, and forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking can help you avoid frontal crashes.

The infotainment systems aren't as up-to-date as those of its competitors, but they're intuitive and easy to use. There is a head up display, an upgraded touchscreen, and smartphone compatibility for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Volkswagen places safety first, and the Atlas is no exception. The standard suite of active safety technologies includes a pre-collision braking system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, and lane departure warning. You can also upgrade to a satnav or heads-up system with navigation.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder makes 269 horsepower and 273 lbft. This powerplant can be ordered with front- or all-wheel-drive and it has a 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity.

EPA ratings are 21/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 20/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. Although this is not the best-in class rating, it is better than other SUVs with four-cylinder engine EPA ratings.

Exterior Style

The Atlas is a tall and bulky SUV that has square shoulders. It's not as elegant as the Kia Telluride nor Hyundai Palisade.

Price

For a front drive model with the standard 2.0 liter four-cylinder, Atlas' MSRP starting MSRP is approximately $24,400 You can find a V-6-powered model for about $1,650 more. You can customize your Atlas to suit any driving situation with a variety of trims and options.
